BICYCLE DAY 2018!

April 18

happy Bicycle Day, all y’all.  you do remember Bicycle Day, yes? It was on April 19th, 1943, that Swiss chemist Albert Hoffman decided to experiment with an interesting molecule he had synthesized in the Sandoz Lab where he worked, a molecule called LSD-25. Sandoz thought there might be a use for lysergic acid, perhaps as an aid in reducing blood loss in women during childbirth.

Well, we now know that, while LSD-25 didn’t do much in the way of controlling blood flow, it had some unexpected and literally mind-blowing mojo of its own. Mojo that was nothing less than staggeringly impressive.  Albert became the first person in history to get a taste of this skull-splitting voodoo on that afternoon of 4-19-43, when he decided to take a teeny tiny dose of 250 micrograms (250 MILLIONTHS of a gram) at 4:20 in the afternoon (!) and then hop on his bike, go home, and see what happened. During the bike ride home, something indeed happened. And stayed happening. All through the night. It mostly scared the bejesus out of Hoffman, but the next morning, he had to admit………wow. everything was really……..super.

Much mischief, ecstasy, raving, understanding, and misunderstanding has taken place in the 75 years since this most remarkable Bike Ride (to put it mildly).

We at Jive Radio have a connection to Bicycle Day.  It goes like this.  1. without LSD, there’s no San Francisco Hippie Experiment of ’65-’68. 2. without the Hippie Experiment, there’s no birth of super groovy, super psychedelic FM “underground” radio (KMPX, KSAN, KFAT, etc. etc. etc.) 3. without super cool FM underground radio, there’s no entities/models to inspire schizoclectic internet broadcasters like us at Jive Radio here in the 21st century.

So there ya go!  Happy Bicycle Day!

And a dandy song to listen to on Bicycle Day is……BIKE,  off the first Pink Floyd album and very probably the most psyched out bike song ever (written by one of the greatest of all LSD enthusiasts in 60’s rock, Syd Barrett)

“I’ve got a bike, you can ride it if you like

It’s got a bell and a basket and things to make it look good

I’d give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it”

the song concludes with the sound of a quacking rubber duck…..scariest rubber duck EVER.  hey, what can you say? it was 1967! and things were getting……re-calibrated.

listening…….less?

April 12

here’s a rundown of the lowdown as we get down on JR every day every week every year…….Jivin’ now since October 2014!

Mon-Fri. from 6am to 10am…..Bruce Van Dyke’s Big Bucket O’ Tunes.  random shufflin’ Jive at its most schizoclectic. kinda. mostly favored by those 60 and up.  people under 50 can handle it, generally speaking, for about 20-30 minutes.

one of the great bossjox from the glory days of KFAT, Sister Tiny, does a show for us, “Sister Tiny’s Song and Dance.”  new shows every Saturday from 12pm-2pm, with reruns on Sunday morning 8-10 and Wednesday morning 10-noon.

our good pal Hayseed Don Darue does his long-time romp, The Risky Biscuit Hayseed Hoot, on Saturday mornings 8-10am, with a repeat on Wednesdays from noon-2pm. (the Hoot has now been on the air for 25 years!)

Diane Michaels–The Diyatollah of Rock n Rollah–fires up her Jive Cafe every Friday from 5-7pm, with repeats on Saturday mornings 6-8am, and Wednesdays 2-4pm.

and last but not lost, the still undemented Lonesome Tom Ward has shape shifted once again, and has now become Lump Sum Tom, who brings to you The Velveeta Underground every Saturday night from 6-8pm.  The VU repeats Wednesdays afternoons 4-6pm.

All Other Times……The Central Scrutinizer controls the programming via the Bucket of Colossus, and who knows what’s gonna spin out of that sucker!

song and artist I.D. thingie

April 12

we know that many of you Jivers, when you hear a nice song you’re unfamiliar with, like to know the song title and the artist. so that’s why that our radio mascot Klappy here on the home page is has a vitally important gig, since he’s in charge of song and artist i.d., and why it’s a pain in the posterior when he’s on not working.  unfortunately, that is often the case.  we are finding out that it just doesn’t take much to aggravate Klappy and bump him into non-function mode.  for this, we apologize.  So as we try to make Klappy a little less touchy, please remember the backup that’s available for those who like identification, and that is the app called Shazam.  easily downloaded to your device of choice (and free, too), it can be greatly helpful.  once installed, you just hold the phone or tablet or whatever up to the speakers and shazam will usually, within seconds, give you song, artist, and probably a pic of the album cover to boot.

Okey dang dokey?  Carry on, schizoclectic music kook!

JiveRadio adds Madras/Bend Oregon

March 22

Install engineer Cliff Peck mounts the antenna for KSQI-96.5FM, OpenSkyRadio’s newest addition to it’s terrestrial broadcast territory. Emanating a comparatively puny 6 watts, the signal covers a few miles around Grizzly Peak, while we wait for the FCC to approve our 1000 watt application, which would bring full service to Bend, Prineville, Redmond & Madras. Onward, over the next horizon!
